If you’re considering a career switch into sterile processing, timing matters. So how long does it actually take to become a sterile processing technician? Here’s a realistic timeline.
The short answer
Most people can be exam-ready in a few weeks to a few months, depending on the format they choose and how much time they put in each week. Add the hands-on experience requirement, and the full path to a complete CRCST credential typically runs a few months to about six months.
Step 1: Training (weeks to ~16 weeks)
How long the coursework takes depends on your format:
- Online self-study is self-paced. Motivated students finish in a few weeks; others spread it over a couple of months around work and family. See self-study →
- Live virtual runs 16 weeks per cohort on a set weekly schedule. See virtual →
- In-person also runs 16 weeks per cohort, with hands-on classroom practice. See in-person →
All three cover the same HSPA 9th Edition material and prepare you for the same exam.
Step 2: The CRCST exam (one test day)
Once you’ve worked through the curriculum and practice tests, you sit for the CRCST exam. You can take it as soon as you feel ready. Curious what’s on it? Read What Is the CRCST Exam?
Step 3: Hands-on experience (alongside or after)
The CRCST credential includes a hands-on experience requirement — supervised hours in a real sterile processing environment. You can pass the exam first and complete these hours afterward.
This is the step that most affects your overall timeline, because it depends on getting into a facility. ATS provides hospital internship assistance to help students line this up rather than searching alone.
Aseptic Technical Solutions is an independent training provider and is not affiliated with HSPA. Experience and recertification requirements are set by HSPA.
How to finish faster
- Choose the format that matches your discipline. Self-study is fastest if you’re self-driven; a cohort’s schedule keeps you moving if you’re not.
- Do the practice tests. Students who use them tend to pass on the first try instead of re-sitting.
- Start the experience conversation early. Don’t wait until after the exam to think about internship hours.
