The most common worry we hear from new sterile processing students isn’t the exam — it’s the catch-22 after it: “Every job wants experience. How do I get experience without a job?” The good news is that sterile processing has a well-worn path in for people starting from zero. Here’s exactly how to walk it.
Why “no experience” isn’t the wall it seems
Two things work in your favor. First, the CRCST is built for beginners: HSPA’s provisional pathway lets you pass the exam before you have any hands-on hours, then complete your 400 hours within six months of passing. So you can walk into a job search already holding a recognized credential. Second, sterile processing is a known entry point — hiring managers expect a share of applicants to be career-changers, and many facilities are short-staffed. New to the credential? Start with What Is a CRCST?
Aseptic Technical Solutions is an independent training provider and is not affiliated with HSPA.
Step 1: Get the credential first — it changes the conversation
Applying with “CRCST (provisional)” at the top of your résumé instantly moves you out of the pile of hopefuls and into the pile of candidates. It signals you’ve learned the workflow, the terminology, and the quality standards — before your first shift. If you haven’t started training yet, that’s the move that unlocks everything else; see How to Become a Sterile Processing Technician.
Step 2: Use an internship to break the catch-22
The cleanest way to turn a certificate into a job is a hospital internship — supervised time in a real department where you complete your provisional hours and, very often, get hired where you trained. This is the single biggest lever for a no-experience candidate, and it’s exactly why we built it into our programs: ATS places students in hospital internships with major regional health systems. An internship solves the experience problem and the “first foot in the door” problem at the same time. It’s also why hands-on, placement-backed training outperforms a certificate alone — more on that in Why Hands-On Training Still Wins.
Step 3: Apply wide — and search every job title
The same role is posted under different names. Search all of them:
- Sterile Processing Technician
- Central Service / Central Sterile Technician
- SPD Technician
- Instrument Technician / Instrument Processor
- Surgical Instrument Reprocessing Technician
And apply beyond hospitals. Ambulatory surgery centers, endoscopy clinics, dental groups, and third-party reprocessing companies all hire SPD techs — often with less competition and friendlier hours than a big hospital. Entry titles like “SPD Tech I” or “Reprocessing Tech” are written for people at your stage.
Step 4: Build a résumé that leads with the credential
Recruiters skim. Put the important things where they’ll be seen:
- CRCST (or CRCST — provisional) at the very top, not buried in a certifications section.
- Translate your past work into transferable strengths — reliability, precision, following strict procedures, working a shift schedule, comfort with physical work. A line cook, a mechanic, a warehouse lead, and a caregiver all have real, relevant habits.
- Name the workflow — “trained on the dirty-to-clean workflow, decontamination, prep and packaging, sterilization, and instrument tracking.”
Step 5: Win the interview by talking like a tech
You don’t need experience to sound like you belong. Hiring managers relax the moment a candidate demonstrates they understand the work:
- Walk through dirty-to-clean flow and why cleaning must precede sterilization.
- Explain what a count sheet is and why tray accuracy matters.
- Mention chemical and biological monitoring as how a load is verified sterile.
- Show you understand the stakes: the OR depends on complete, on-time, sterile trays.
Then close on reliability and shift flexibility — being open to evenings, nights, or weekends makes you dramatically easier to hire.
Step 6: Say yes to the shift that gets you in
Your first SPD job is a launchpad, not a destination. An off-shift or a surgery center role gets you on the payroll, completes your provisional hours, and — a year later — makes you the experienced candidate everyone wanted. From there the ladder opens up: lead tech, educator, supervisor, manager. See where it goes in From Technician to Leader.
The bottom line
Getting a sterile processing job with no experience comes down to a repeatable sequence: earn the CRCST (provisionally is fine), use an internship to complete your hours and get in the door, apply wide under every job title, lead your résumé with the credential, and interview like someone who already understands the workflow. That’s a path thousands take every year — and it’s the one ATS is built to walk you through, internship placement included.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a sterile processing job with no experience?
Yes. HSPA’s provisional pathway lets you pass the CRCST exam before you have any hands-on hours, so you can apply already holding the credential. An internship or an entry-level “SPD Tech I” role then lets you complete your 400 hours on the job.
How do I get sterile processing experience to qualify?
The two common routes are a hospital internship (supervised hours in a real department, often leading to a job) or an entry-level position where you complete your provisional hours on the payroll. ATS includes hospital internship placement for exactly this reason.
What should a sterile processing résumé include with no experience?
Lead with your CRCST (or CRCST — provisional) at the very top, then translate past work into transferable strengths — reliability, precision, following strict procedures, shift work, and physical stamina — and name the SPD workflow you trained on.
Do surgery centers hire sterile processing techs without experience?
Yes. Ambulatory surgery centers, endoscopy clinics, dental groups, and third-party reprocessing companies all hire entry-level SPD techs, often with less competition and friendlier hours than large hospitals.
How long does it take to get hired after certification?
It varies, but candidates who hold the CRCST and are flexible on shift often find an entry role or internship within weeks to a few months. Being open to evenings, nights, or weekends meaningfully speeds up hiring.
