The CRCST exam isn’t tricky — it’s thorough. It draws from the entire HSPA 9th Edition curriculum, so the people who struggle are almost always the ones who crammed a few chapters. The people who pass comfortably follow a study rhythm. Here’s the one that works, plus what to expect on test day. For what the exam is at a high level, start with What Is the CRCST Exam?
Know exactly what you’re preparing for
Per HSPA, the CRCST exam is 150 multiple-choice questions with a three-hour limit and a $140 fee. You can sit it before you have hands-on experience under the provisional pathway, then complete your 400 hours within six months of passing. Questions are application-style — they test whether you understand the why, not just definitions.

The study rhythm that passes
1. Work the whole curriculum, in order
The exam covers everything — decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, prep and packaging, storage and distribution, and the “dry” chapters most people want to skip: microbiology, regulations, quality assurance, and inventory management. Those dry chapters are tested exactly like the rest. Go chapter by chapter; don’t leave gaps.
2. Quiz continuously, not just at the end
Testing yourself as you go is the single biggest predictor of passing. After each chapter, answer questions on it. Retrieval practice cements knowledge far better than re-reading. This is built into structured programs — one reason hands-on, instructor-led training tends to produce stronger pass rates than reading alone.
3. Master the vocabulary and the “why”
Sterile processing has a precise vocabulary — bioburden, lumen, Bowie-Dick, biological indicator, event-related sterility. Learn the terms and the reason behind each practice. When you understand why cleaning must precede sterilization, or why a failed biological indicator means a recall, the application questions answer themselves.
4. Drill full-length, timed practice tests
Before you schedule the real exam, take at least one or two full 150-question, three-hour practice tests. This does three things: builds stamina for a long sitting, exposes your weak content areas, and makes the real exam feel routine. Every attempt costs $140 — so you want your surprises to happen in practice.
5. Schedule when your scores are consistently strong
Don’t book the exam by the calendar; book it by your practice scores. When you’re passing full-length practice tests comfortably and repeatedly, you’re ready. If a content area keeps dragging your score, fix that area first.
A simple week-by-week approach
Let your 16-week program set the pace and quiz as you go. A workable rhythm alongside it: two to three chapters a week with end-of-chapter quizzing, a mid-point cumulative review, then two weeks of full-length timed practice tests before booking.
Test-day tips
- Read every question fully. Application questions often hinge on one qualifier (“first,” “best,” “except”).
- Eliminate, then choose. Rule out the clearly wrong answers; the best remaining option is usually right.
- Don’t get stuck. Flag a hard question, move on, and return — you have three hours, but pacing matters.
- Trust your preparation. If your practice scores were solid, resist second-guessing.
If you don’t pass
You can retake it (HSPA lists the retake at $140). Review your weakest content areas first, drill more full-length practice tests until you’re passing comfortably, then re-book. ATS students can ask about repeating the course — retakes are considered at our discretion — so a re-sit is a setback, not a dead end.
The bottom line
Passing the CRCST comes down to covering the whole curriculum, quizzing yourself continuously, understanding the why, and drilling full-length timed practice tests until strong. Do that, and test day is a formality. Ready to prepare the right way? Start with an in-person cohort, or compare training formats to find your fit.
Frequently asked questions
How hard is the CRCST exam?
